Starting therapy for the first time can feel like a big step — and it's completely normal to feel a mix of curiosity, nervousness and uncertainty about what actually happens once you walk through the door, or log into your first video call. At The Meeting Matters, we want your first session to feel like a conversation, not an interrogation — a space where you set the pace.
Before Your Session
You don't need to prepare a speech or have your thoughts perfectly organised. Some clients like to jot down a few points beforehand — what's been on their mind, what they're hoping to get out of therapy — but this is entirely optional. If you're attending online, all you need is a private space and a stable internet connection. If you're visiting our Islamabad clinic, simply arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
What Happens in the Room
Your first session is mostly about your therapist getting to know you — your current concerns, relevant history, and what's brought you to seek support now. This isn't a test, and there's no "right" way to answer. Your therapist will ask open-ended questions and give you space to share as much or as little as feels comfortable. Many clients are surprised by how quickly the conversation starts to feel natural.
Common Questions Your Therapist May Ask
- What brings you to therapy at this point in your life?
- Have you attended therapy before, and if so, what was helpful or unhelpful about it?
- Is there anything specific you're hoping to work on or change?
- A little about your background — family, relationships, work — where relevant to your concerns.
You're always in control of how much you share. If a question feels too soon to answer, it's completely fine to say so — your therapist will follow your lead.
What You Don't Have to Do
You don't need to have a diagnosis, a clearly defined "problem", or even know exactly what you want to talk about. Many clients start therapy simply because something feels harder than it should — that's a valid enough reason to begin. You also don't have to have your whole life story ready; therapy unfolds gradually, session by session.
After Your First Session
Towards the end of the session, your therapist will usually share some initial thoughts on how they can support you, and suggest a general direction for the sessions ahead. This isn't a fixed treatment plan carved in stone — it evolves as you and your therapist learn more about what works for you.
A Few Reassurances
- Everything you share is confidential — see our Privacy & Confidentiality Policy for the full details.
- There's no judgment — your therapist has heard many different stories, and their role is to support you, not evaluate you.
- You can go at your own pace — you're never required to share more than feels right, in your first session or any session after.
- It's okay if it doesn't feel like a perfect fit — finding the right therapist sometimes takes a session or two, and our team is happy to help match you with someone better suited if needed.
If you're ready to take the first step, you can book an appointment with one of our therapists today — online or at our Islamabad clinic.
