My Child Is Struggling in School — What's Actually Going On?

"They're smart, so why can't they keep up?" It's the question I hear most from parents — and it's rarely about intelligence at all.

Lamiah Munaf · 2026-07-23

"They're clearly smart — so why can't they keep up in class?" It's one of the most common things parents say to me, usually with a mix of confusion and guilt, as if they've somehow missed something obvious. In my experience as an Educational Remedial Therapist, the honest answer is almost never about intelligence. It's about how a specific child's brain processes attention, communication, or information — and that's a completely different problem to solve.

Learning Difficulties Aren't About Intelligence

A child who struggles to finish homework, loses focus mid-task, or seems to "just not try hard enough" is often working twice as hard as their classmates for half the visible result. Learning difficulties show up as a mismatch between effort and outcome, not a lack of ability — and once parents see it that way, a lot of the frustration on both sides starts to ease.

What I Look For First

Before assuming a child needs to "focus more," I look at where the actual breakdown happens: is it attention and concentration, communication and expressing understanding, or the behavioral patterns that show up around schoolwork — avoidance, meltdowns, shutting down. These aren't separate problems; they're usually connected, and treating only the visible behavior without understanding what's underneath it rarely holds.

Why Home Strategies Matter as Much as Sessions

A weekly session can build skills, but a child spends far more hours at home than in my office — which is why I put real weight on equipping parents with practical, home-based strategies, not just handing back a "fixed" child after each session. Simple, consistent routines at home — how homework time is structured, how instructions are given, how progress is acknowledged — often move the needle more than anything that happens in the room with me.

When It's Actually Something Else

Sometimes what looks like a learning difficulty is actually anxiety about failing showing up as avoidance, or an attention pattern consistent with ADHD that hasn't been named yet. Part of my job in the first few sessions is figuring out which of these is actually driving what parents are seeing, since the right support looks different depending on the real cause. For older children heading into the social and emotional pressures of adolescence, this often connects with the wider work I do in teen counseling as well.

If your child is working hard but still falling behind, that's usually a sign something specific and addressable is going on — not a lack of effort. Learn more about learning difficulties therapy, book a session with me directly, or message us on WhatsApp to talk through what you're seeing at home.
