Anger Isn't the Problem — What's Underneath It Usually Is

Clients often come to me wanting to 'control their anger' — but after 1500+ clinical hours, I've found the anger is rarely the actual problem. Here's what's usually going on underneath it.

Tasmia Asghar · 2026-07-23

Clients rarely book a session and say "I want to understand my anger." What they usually say is some version of "I need to control it before it costs me something" — a relationship, a job, their kids' respect. That framing makes sense, but after more than 1500 hours of clinical work, I've come to see anger less as the problem itself and more as a signal pointing at something underneath it.

What Anger Is Usually Protecting

In session, anger almost always turns out to be covering something more vulnerable — fear of losing control, hurt that hasn't been named, or the feeling of being disrespected or unheard. It's rarely irrational once you trace it back; it's often the only emotion that felt safe or acceptable to show. Part of the work is simply making that underlying feeling nameable, because you can't regulate what you haven't identified.

How I Use DBT to Help Clients Regulate in the Moment

Dialectical Behavior Therapy gives clients concrete distress tolerance skills — practical tools for the actual moment anger starts to spike, not just theory to reflect on afterward. Things like recognizing early physical warning signs before the reaction takes over, and having a genuine pause technique ready rather than relying on willpower alone in the moment. These are learnable skills, not personality traits some people have and others don't.

Where NLP Comes In

Neuro-Linguistic Programming complements this by working on the automatic pattern itself — the near-instant loop between a trigger, a thought, and the reaction that follows before a person even consciously registers what happened. Much of my NLP training focuses on interrupting and reshaping that automatic script, so the pause created by DBT skills has something new to fill it with, rather than just delaying the same old reaction.

It's Rarely Just About Anger

In practice, anger work overlaps constantly with the other areas I specialise in — relationship crisis, family conflict, and even body image work, since a harsh inner critic often shows up as irritability directed outward. Clients working through anger management frequently end up also addressing relationship patterns or underlying anxiety, because the anger was never really isolated from the rest of what they were carrying.

If anger has been costing you more than you're comfortable admitting, it's worth understanding what's actually underneath it rather than just trying to suppress it. Book a confidential session with me directly, or message us on WhatsApp to talk through what you're dealing with.
